Combinations are fun, right? Peanut butter and jelly: Classic! Multitools: Handy! Shirts and jackets: Shackets! It can be dicey melding two things into one, but when it works, it works.

In related news, Pit Viper did a very Pit Viper thing and pushed the limits with its latest release: The Synthesizer. This isn't just any old pair of wraparound sunglasses though — oh goodness, no.

This is something different, maybe even extreme; the Synthesizer is part sunglasses, part snow goggles. They're potentially the quiver killer of winterized outdoor eyewear, and they might be our new favorite combo. Here's what you need to know.

The Synthesizer: The Details

Pit Viper's new drop brings the world of shredding the slopes and chilling aprés together in one package. The Synthesizer features the classic wraparound silhouette that put Pit Viper on the map, with a few extra bells and whistles.

An anti-fog coating keeps things crystal clear, whether you're sliding sideways or sitting in the hot tub. The nose bender and adjustable arms provide a semi-custom fit and help maintain comfort. A retainer strap and non-slip rubber touchpoints also help keep the shades firmly on your face. The removable foam inserts minimize fogging further, and the lens can be swapped to an included clear one to adapt to changing conditions.

At less than 2 ounces with the foam inserts, the Synthesizer is far lighter than a traditional pair of snow/ski goggles — and cheaper than a lot of them, too.

Who is the Synthesizer for?

While many of the innovations in sunglasses and goggles focus on lens quality, fit and weight reduction, Pit Viper's newest release focuses bridging the gap between on-mountain action and the after-party.

We wouldn't necessarily recommend it for harsh mid-winter conditions, where something a bit burlier is probably best. However, if you're sick of carrying around an extra pair of sunglasses, overheating on bluebird days or having two pieces of gear when one might do, the Synthesizer may just be for you.

The Synthesizer comes in four colorways — The Standard, The Shabooms, The Son of Peach, and The Mangrove — and just dropped today.
