The James Brand's Coolest New Releases Aren't Even Knives

The James Brand's new communication-centered essentials bring the brand's trademark elevated design to everyday items.

In the world of knives and everyday carry, there are a few brands that have left their mark, whether it's through minimalist design, high-quality materials or unique shapes. For the uninitiated, The James Brand has built a reputation for curating a small collection of pared-back, minimalist and design-forward knives. If I told you The James Brand just dropped a couple new products, what's the first thing that would come to mind? Knives, right?

In this case, for once, you'd be wrong. Because in the pursuit of redesigning the EDC essentials that get us through the day, TJB just released two brand-new communication-based accessories — The Gatecliff notebook sleeve and The Burwell click pen — and redesigned its best-selling Stilwell compact pen.

Sure, they don't have blades, but that's OK. The Gatecliff notebook sleeve and Burwell pen round out one of the last areas of EDC The James Brand had yet to conquer — general communication. TJB launched its first pen back in 2017, but now the team appears to be pouring significant energy into the category, which is big news for fans of physical note-taking, to-do lists, doodling and generally putting pen to paper. Here's what you need to know.

What's so cool about this notebook sleeve?

That microfiber suede is looking mighty soft — but don’t worry, it’ll still protect your stuff.

The Gatecliff is the first major softgoods item from the brand. It's both strong and cushy — the exterior is built with a fully welded water-resistant Cordura with a PU-coated zipper, while the interior features a microfiber layer meant to protect your passport, credit cards, phone, notebook and more.

Curious how it might accommodate your essentials? The Gatecliff's dimensions are 6.3 inches (high) by 4.8 inches (wide) by 0.8 inches (deep), with 2 card pockets and a loop for your pen. Bonus: TJB throws in one of its own daily notebooks to get you started.

What's notable about the new pen?

If you look closely, you can spot the machined-in dots that help with grip.

The Burwell is the second click pen to come from TJB, and it packs some very functional design qualities. Built with a stainless steel two-part barrel in a compact design, the Burwell is available in a polished stainless steel or in a PVD-coated black finish, so you can match it to the rest of your kit.

The clicker is smooth, and the barrel features a machined-in dot pattern which enhances grip in slippery conditions. Have a feeling you'll want to use this for a lifetime? You're in luck — the Burwell is compatible with Parker Style G2 ink refills.

Anything else I should know?

The James Brand also redesigned its popular Stilwell pen; the construction is simplified, the pen is lighter, and the barrel and cap both got design updates. TJB implemented a new 3-part gasket system that eases deployment, and incorporated the machined-in dots you'll see on the Burwell. If you've been waiting to cop the Stilwell, this redesign is the motivation you'll need to finally order one for yourself.

We expect this kit to go fast, so if you like what you see — act now.
