The running bug is an infectious critter, yet few conditions test our dedication to the discipline like winter weather. Try as we might, signing up for a jog through the chills, slush, rain and snow is a hard sell for even the most enthusiastic athlete. Thankfully, today’s running gear is more capable than ever to help you stretch those miles far into the solstice.

Having a well-to-do winter running kit can be perfect for keeping spirits bright once the forecasts turn for the worse. A system filled with warmth, performance and comfort can make all the difference when it comes time to choose between an afternoon workout and a rest day nestled up on the couch (don’t worry, those are important, too).

But which pieces fit the puzzle when building out your ensemble? Which layers, outerwear, accessories and more should you have at the ready once the temps begin to plummet? Bundle up — we’re about to embark on a winter wardrobe refresh.

How We Tested

Our runners here at Gear Patrol have had yearly battles with the elements for quite some time, with each season giving us an opportunity to test out the latest and greatest cold weather running essentials. Each pick listed in this guide was chosen for its thermal qualities, weather resistance, style and/or comfort levels, because let’s face it … winter running is not the most comfortable endeavor to begin with. We’ve focused this curated roundup on apparel and accessories, as we’ve already covered winter running shoes in depth (which you can find here).

What to Look for in Winter Running Gear

Warmth

Naturally, one of the first requirements of any worthwhile cold weather running item is how well it keeps you warm during training. Many brands will employ some thermoregulating textile across their apparel, with merino wool being a top option along with polyester and other fabrics. Be sure to look for items that offer some heat-retaining makeup without any unnecessary bulk. You’ll need to be agile in these garments, after all, so hefty layers that are closer to ski gear may not be the best fit.

Moisture Control

Despite the frigid temperatures outside, you’re still plenty capable of working up a sweat while running in the cold. While it might not seem like a big issue in the moment, that sweat and moisture can prove fatal once your workout ends. The pooled wetness can begin to cool your body in line with the exterior temperatures once you stop running, potentially leading to hypothermia and other issues. To help combat this dilemma, look for apparel offering some form of sweat-wicking technology. These components can help pull the sweat from your frame, allowing it to dissipate from your physique while still keeping your skin and body dry.

Weather Resistance

Winter weather isn’t always the most picturesque environment. There’s rain and snow and just some terrible, horrible, no good, very bad forecasts. So, to help you stay on track with your workouts, overcast be damned, be sure to opt for outer layers that can withstand some precipitation and wind. Many top-performing jackets and pants employ a DWR finish which can boost their waterproofing, but with that comes a little drop in breathability. It’s a balancing act, for sure, but one you’re likely to be happy you signed up in the long haul.

Comfort

As we’ve stated before, winter running isn’t the most pleasant experience for some, so taking off for a workout with uncomfortable gear is just setting yourself up for failure. To make the training less of a burden, pay close attention to size charts and other factors like materials to help make your aesthetic as cozy as possible.
