14 Black-Owned and Black-Led Breweries You Should Know

Less than 1% of the nearly 8,500 craft breweries in America are Black-owned. That needs to change.

The craft beer industry has a problem with a lack of diversity. According to the Brewer's Association 2021 survey on diversity, non-Hispanic whites accounted for 93.5 percent of craft brewery owners, with just 0.4 percent of brewery owners being non-Hispanic Black (Hispanics of all races made up 2.2 percent of owners). What's more, out of the more than 9,500 craft breweries in the United States, only around one percent of them are Black-owned.

These numbers are not OK — as of 2023, the Black population in the U.S. stands at 14.2 percent, according to the Pew Research Center — and we start to change that by lifting up and supporting those who are forging paths for others to follow. In May of 2023, the National Black Brewers Association (NB2A) was formed to do just that. Founded by former NBA All-Star and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and led by a consortium of Black brewery owners, the NB2A looks will serve as a one-stop resource for Black brewers while also promoting the Black brewing community, advocating for political policies that benefit it, increasing education and awareness of Black brewing's history in the country and working to increase the number of African Americans involved in all positions of the brewing industry — especially at the top.

If you'd like some recommendations on some excellent Black-owned and Black-led breweries to support, we've compiled a list of 14 breweries that you should definitely seek out. This list is by no means comprehensive or a "best of" — it is simply a collection of some notable Black-led breweries in the country that you should know and support.
